Gaboeme Part and Parcel Of The Athletes Safeguarding Summit

GABORONE: Botswana Football Association safeguarding officer Ms. Galebowe Gaboeme was recently invited by The Sport Management Agency (SMA) which hosted athletes, coaches, media and sports administrators for a two-day summit on August 17-18, 2023, at Botho University in Gaborone under the theme of “My Safety, My Right,”. 

When launching the summit on Monday, 14 August 2023, Co-Director Game Mothibi said, “our summit will discuss 4 thematic areas, with distinguished moderators and panelists representing athletes, administrators and other officials.

 With this expertise, we are confident that there will be great discussions and important recommendations will come out of the summit. The summit was a platform to encourage open honest discussion on safety in sport, talk against abuse, harassment, poor practices, etc.

The summit brought together 120 delegates, including Safeguarding Officers and the media, to discuss critical safety measures for athletes, especially girls and women in Sports.

On the second day of the Athletes Summit started with a session discussing “Why athletes don’t tell and what do they need”

The panel was moderated by Merapelo  Mogojwe, Safeguarding Officer for  Basketball, included Seabotseng Bafeletse of BGBVPC, Lebowa Moroen the Journalist from Yarona FM, Tracy Shathani Chaba Disang  Volleyball Athlete, and Galebowe Gaboeme a  BFA  Safeguarding Officer

The Mares Display Heart In Tri Nations Challenge

Botswana’s senior women’s national football team recently concluded their campaign in the prestigious Three Nations Challenge, hosted by South Africa from 28 May to 3 June at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The series saw spirited competition between Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia, as teams continued their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.

 

Despite narrowly missing out on the top prize, Botswana showed immense character and growth throughout the tournament. The Mares kicked off their campaign with a thrilling encounter against the African champions South Africa, narrowly going down 3-2 in a tightly contested match. The team bounced back with a determined performance against Zambia, securing a 1-1 draw and demonstrating resilience and tactical discipline.

 

 

Final Tournament Results:

South Africa 3–2 Botswana

Botswana 1–1 Zambia

South Africa 2–0 Zambia

 

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana were ultimately crowned champions of the series, winning both of their matches to take the top spot. The tournament offered valuable game time and experience for all participating nations, and Botswana’s technical team, led by Head Coach Alex Malete, will take key insights from these fixtures as they refine the squad for the crucial WAFCON fianals.
