BFA-DTCB Commence Girls Grassroots Festival

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) and Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) will on Friday 22nd April 2022 kickstart their grassroots Girls Specific Festivals in Jwaneng.

The festivals which were aimed at promoting the women’s games through girls between the ages of 6-12 years by affording them and opportunity to play, have fun and learn life skills through football will commence at the Jwaneng Galaxy Stadium.

The festivals are also a means of developing girls’ specific grassroots centers that will feed youth teams at regional level and increase girls mass production in football.

After Jwaneng the festival will head to Phikwe Regional Football Association on the 22-21 May 2022 before concluding in the Francistown Regional Football Association between 12-13 August 2022

Each region will have a maximum of 80 participants being monitored by 12 trained coaches. 40 girls will be in the Under8 category while 20 will be in the Under10 and Under12 respectively.

BFA Women’s Football Manager Ms. Tsholofelo Setlhoko said the idea came about after an expression of interest by schools

“This is the first of its kind, initially we had visited schools and they were interested in the idea that’s when we partnered with DTCB who sponsored us with P150,000.00 over the three (3) festivals”, concluded Ms. Setlhoko

The Mares Display Heart In Tri Nations Challenge

Botswana’s senior women’s national football team recently concluded their campaign in the prestigious Three Nations Challenge, hosted by South Africa from 28 May to 3 June at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The series saw spirited competition between Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia, as teams continued their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.

 

Despite narrowly missing out on the top prize, Botswana showed immense character and growth throughout the tournament. The Mares kicked off their campaign with a thrilling encounter against the African champions South Africa, narrowly going down 3-2 in a tightly contested match. The team bounced back with a determined performance against Zambia, securing a 1-1 draw and demonstrating resilience and tactical discipline.

 

 

Final Tournament Results:

South Africa 3–2 Botswana

Botswana 1–1 Zambia

South Africa 2–0 Zambia

 

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana were ultimately crowned champions of the series, winning both of their matches to take the top spot. The tournament offered valuable game time and experience for all participating nations, and Botswana’s technical team, led by Head Coach Alex Malete, will take key insights from these fixtures as they refine the squad for the crucial WAFCON fianals.
