BFA Signs A Deal With British Council

Botswana Football Association (BFA) President Maclean Letshwiti signed a memorandum of agreement with the British Council yesterday in Lekidi Football Centre.

BFA have been magnificently benefiting from the British Council and the new deal will BFA continuing to benefit premier skills programs from the council. Premier skills is a collaborative project between the British Council and the English Premier League. It was firstly introduced in Botswana on 2009.

Giving out her speech, the British Council representative Nobantu Kalake stated that they are delighted to renew their mandate to continue partnership with BFA, “ most of you are no strangers to the British council premier skills program but I am however aware that not enough was done to effectively tell the story of what this program is all about,” Kalake stated.

Kalake went on to plead with BFA to take advantage of the partnership as it can help improve the standard of football in Botswana. Moreover she urged BFA to think out of the box and see how best the program can benefit the community. She said ever since the introduction they have been able to produce more 300-community coaches. Kalake said it is their aim to reach different parts of the country in ensuring that there is a footprint of premier skills program all over Botswana.

Having his say, Letshwiti did not hesitate to share his delightful emotions pertaining the sponsorship saying, “its an honor for BFA to work with British Council,” He said through the partnership Botswana can be able to play in top class competitions like AFCON and the World Cup. Letshwiti stated that Botswana is not present in such competitions because vigorous development programs are not on place.

BOTSWANA U-20 WOMEN EXIT WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS WITH PRIDE AFTER HOME VICTORY

The Botswana U-20 Women’s National Team bowed out of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers 2026 on a positive note after securing a 1–0 victory over Cameroon U-20 Women’s National Team this past weekend, despite a 5–1 aggregate defeat.

Having suffered a heavy 5–0 loss in the first leg played on 7 February 2026 at Olembe Stadium in Cameroon, the Young Mares showed resilience and determination in the return leg at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium.

Forward Mbapeua Hangara scored the decisive goal in the second half, giving Botswana a deserved win in front of their home supporters and demonstrating the team’s fighting spirit until the final whistle.

Head coach Tapaphiwa Tracey Gaebolae expressed pride in her players performance and attitude, emphasizing the positive response after the first-leg setback.

“We are very proud of the girls. Even though we didn’t get the result we wanted in Cameroon, we came here with a positive mindset. The message to the team was that we needed to score more goals, stay organized, and believe in ourselves and I think the players responded very well.” Coach Gaebolae alluded at the post match Technical press conference.

Despite exiting the competition, the Young Mares leave the qualifiers with valuable international experience and renewed confidence, highlighting the growth and potential of women’s football in Botswana.
