Jwaneng Galaxy and Gaborone United Set to Embark In CAF Championship Tug of Wars

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) held the draw for the preliminary rounds of the 2023-24 CAF Champions League and the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup at its CAF headquarters on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, kicking off this year’s continental football tournaments showpiece.
 
The South African Morena Ramoreboli’s side, Jwaneng Galaxy will host Vipers SC from Uganga in the 2023/24 season of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 1st preliminary round on Match 21.
Gaborone United, who finished as runners-up to Jwaneng Galaxy in the Botswana Premier League last season and also won the Orange FA Cup season 4 this season, host Elgeco Plus of Madagascar in the first round of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup campaign opener.
 
Egypt’s Al Ahly are the current holders of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after their fiercely contested victory over Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca. At the same time, USM Alger of Algeria hold the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup title after overcoming Tanzania’s Young Africans in one of the tournament’s most memorable finals.
 
Games will begin with the first legs of the first preliminary rounds on August 18 through August 20.

The Mares Display Heart In Tri Nations Challenge

Botswana’s senior women’s national football team recently concluded their campaign in the prestigious Three Nations Challenge, hosted by South Africa from 28 May to 3 June at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The series saw spirited competition between Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia, as teams continued their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.

 

Despite narrowly missing out on the top prize, Botswana showed immense character and growth throughout the tournament. The Mares kicked off their campaign with a thrilling encounter against the African champions South Africa, narrowly going down 3-2 in a tightly contested match. The team bounced back with a determined performance against Zambia, securing a 1-1 draw and demonstrating resilience and tactical discipline.

South Africa 3–2 Botswana

Botswana 1–1 Zambia

South Africa 2–0 Zambia

 

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana were ultimately crowned champions of the series, winning both of their matches to take the top spot. The tournament offered valuable game time and experience for all participating nations, and Botswana’s technical team, led by Head Coach Alex Malete, will take key insights from these fixtures as they refine the squad for the crucial WAFCON fianals.
