Botswana Football Association (BFA) hosted a send-off ceremony for the Botswana senior women national team โ€œThe Maresโ€ today the 17th June 2022 at Lekidi Football Centre, Gaborone. The team will leave for Morocco to take part in the Women Africa Cup of the Nations set to commence on the 2nd to 23 July 2022.
 
Giving his keynote address, Minister of Sport Hon Tumiso Rakgare called for the support from the nation at large to rally behind the team as they will be taking part for the first time in Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Rakgare further thanked Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) for the immense support they have been ushering to women football development in Botswana. The minister also called the business community to commit to supporting womens football and sports.
 
The mares will head to Morocco on the 19th June for training camp in the host country where they are expected to play 3 international friendly games.
 
Caretaker of the squad Gaoletlhoo Nkutlwisang expresses her gratitude towards the support the association, government and general public have been imparting to the team. Head coach had the opportunity to announce her squad for Morocco Women Africa Cup of Nations 2022.

The Mares Display Heart In Tri Nations Challenge

Botswanaโ€™s senior womenโ€™s national football team recently concluded their campaign in the prestigious Three Nations Challenge, hosted by South Africa from 28 May to 3 June at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. The series saw spirited competition between Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia, as teams continued their preparations for the upcoming Womenโ€™s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.

 

Despite narrowly missing out on the top prize, Botswana showed immense character and growth throughout the tournament. The Mares kicked off their campaign with a thrilling encounter against the African champions South Africa, narrowly going down 3-2 in a tightly contested match. The team bounced back with a determined performance against Zambia, securing a 1-1 draw and demonstrating resilience and tactical discipline.

South Africaโ€™s Banyana Banyana were ultimately crowned champions of the series, winning both of their matches to take the top spot. The tournament offered valuable game time and experience for all participating nations, and Botswanaโ€™s technical team, led by Head Coach Alex Malete, will take key insights from these fixtures as they refine the squad for the crucial WAFCON fianals.
