Football For Friendship Report: How did they go?

7th June
On the day of departure we had Segoditshane Prmary School fellow students to Peo Ogolotse, parents, BFA and coaches send off the team at Sir Seretse Khama Airport.

8th June
At our arrival at Istanbul we had a Gazprom F4F representative waiting for us to ensure that entry into Russia would be seamless, this is where we took a flight with delegations from other countries, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, South Africa, Egypt to name but a few.

Our arrival and entry through the Vuznikov Airport was seamless through the great efforts of the representative who travelled with us from Istanbul. Upon our arrival the teams were shuttled to the Hotel via a route that took us past the Iconic Luznhiki stadium in which we were to see the Opening match, and other key landmarks.

Upon our arrival at the hotel (Izlamalov – Delta and Gamma Hotel) we were ushered in like ‘celebrities’ with cameras flashing, which was a great experience for the children, we immediately received immaculate help from our team attachés, Ms. Ekatrina Kazmina (who had been in contact since day one) and Angelika who was designated to take care of the children and be team leader for TEAM KING COBRA. They assisted us into checking in and settling well in our rooms.

9th June
The International Football For Friendship camp started with an Opening Ceremony at the Spartak Football Academy named after Fyodor Cherenkov. For the following 3 days the camp would be based at the Spartak Football academy. The opening ceremony was graced by all the participants from 211 countries who had been divided into 32 teams. Our children from Botswana were in TEAM KING COBRA.
Post the opening ceremony the young participants got to know each other and make new friends by taking part in  9 values (Friendship, Equality, Fairness, Health, Peace, Devotion, Victory, Traditions and Honour) classes, training for coaches and players, while the young journalists were taught how to take pictures using light to their advantage.

9th – 11th June
On these days the young participants went through a rich programme at the Spartak Football Academy where they learnt various things in their respective fields, the players and coaches got to interact with the captain of the Russian Football Team of persons with cerebral palsy, who is a London 2012 Paralympic champion as well as 3 time world champion Mr. Ivan Potekhin. He taught them about following dreams and not letting any limitations hinge their progress and aspirations.

The young journalists got to know more on impact of reporting stories and learnt more on the 32 teams named after animals of which several of them are close to extinction. They also had an opportunity to meet the creator of the F4F mascots (Freddy and Freida) Mr. Bill Asprey, who is a British artist, he taught them on creativity and how to tap into it.

12th June
On this day the 32 teams which had prepared at the camp for the past 3 days came met at the Lokomotiv Stadium – Sapsan Arena Stadium for the 2018 Football for Friendship World Championship. 32 International Football Teams of Friendship were formed and named after rare and endangered animals, along with the positions of each Young Footballer (goalkeeper, back, halfback and forward) from 211 countries and regions. The teams formed under the «football for friendship» principle helped the children of various nationalities and cultures to find common ground and make compromises in the name of common victory. Kaone Kolagano – Young Coach was head coach for TEAM KING COBRA, which won two games and lost one against the eventual winners TEAM CHIMPANZEE. Unfortunately only one team from the group was to progress hence Team Chimpanzee progressed.
